IHS provides health services through IHS and tribally contracted hospitals, health centers, school health centers, and health stations. IHS provides services to any persons of Indian descent who seek treatment at an IHS facility and does not require a finding that they “belong to” the local Indian community. Services provided include medical, dental, and environmental health programs. Disease prevention/ health promotion, alcoholism, substance abuse, suicide, accidents, maternal and child health, and nutrition are emphasized at IHS.

Avera Children’s Hospital
Avera Children’s is a hospital within a hospital and has a Level IIIB NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit), in addition to the Pediatric and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Avera has the region and city’s only specialized child and adolescent units at the Avera Behavioral Health Center.  Avera Children’s has a team of 30+ physicians working with specially trained staff with expertise in over 20 specialties. Costs may be covered by Medicaid, insurance, and private payment.

Sanford Children’s Hospital houses the Tertiary Care Pediatric and Pediatric Intensive Care Units as well as the Level III NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). Shriner’s Hospitals for Children provides care to children up to 18 years of age with bone, muscle, or joint conditions; burn injuries; and other special healthcare needs at no cost to families. Transportation assistance is also available.

Sanford Home Health

Provides skilled nursing care, physical therapy, home health aids to assist with personal care, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and medical social workers.  Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance accepted.  Sliding fee scales available.

Circle of Smiles

A program to improve preventive oral health on South Dakota reservations. Services provided will include sealants, cleanings, fluoride varnish and oral health education.

Dakota Smiles Mobile Dental Program

Two mobile dental trucks treat children ages 0-21 without access to dental care. Dental services include teeth cleaning, fillings for cavities, tooth extractions, dental sealants, fluoride treatments, instruction on care of teeth and gums, stainless steel crowns (children only), tobacco and smoking cessation counseling. Private insurance and Medicaid accepted. No child is turned away for inability to pay.


Delta Dental of South Dakota

Delta Dental assists in locating pediatric dentists and maintains a Medicaid Hotline for patients with urgent dental needs who are experiencing difficulty getting into a dentist.
